Known for its uncensored and irreverent reporting of New York events and the media world, Gawker is shifting its focus and entering the realm of politics just in time for the 2016 election. Gawker’s founder, Nick Denton, said the site will “ride the circus of the 2016 campaign cycle, seizing the opportunity to reorient its editorial scope on political news, commentary and satire.” Gawker’s new politics focus comes as the site looks to stay competitive in a constantly evolving media market. Gawker will still keep its comedy edge – looking to “The Daily Show” and HBO’s John Oliver as examples – and will also send reporters out on the campaign trail. Executive Editor John Cook previewed the creative opportunities covering the 2016 campaign will bring, saying their reporters will “obsessively monitor the dark and hilarious lunatic fringes on the right and left.”
