Positioning itself for a forthcoming nightly news show on HBO, VICE has named Ryan McCarthy as the new editor-in-chief of VICE News. According to a memo obtained by The Huffington Post, McCarthy’s hire will mean shifting current editor-in-chief, Jason Mojica, to the head of international coverage. Prior to his current role as an assistant editor on The New York Times national desk, McCarthy worked for The Huffington Post, Reuters and The Washington Post. While a start date for the new show has yet to be announced, McCarthy is one of several hires VICE has made as they start to build momentum for the show which has been in the works for over a year. Some of the other hires noted in the memo include Javier Guzman, previously of Fusion, as senior producer for U.S. news, Christina Vallice of “NBC Nightly News” as a breaking news supervising producer, Jessica Weisberg, previously of “Serial,” as lead stories supervising producer and Dan Felter, formerly of Time, Bloomberg and Facebook, as the head of social media for VICE News and nightly/weekly programming.
