Mashable wants to step up the way digital outlets report on campaigns. The solution? Hiring NPR’s Juana Summers. In anticipation of the 2016 election cycle, the popular online news source announced the hire of Summers as its first full-time politics editor. While only a decade old, Mashable has seen impressive growth thanks to a focus on content designed for social media sharing. In talking about their success and desire to add politics to the mix, Mashable Executive Editor and Chief Content Officer Jim Roberts said, “I want us to cover the campaign in ways that will constantly surprise people. I want us to tell the stories other outlets may overlook, and I want to present them in a way that I haven’t been able to do before.” Having covered Congress for NPR and politics and the defense industry at POLITICO, Mashable is placing a bet that Summers’ seasoned expertise is exactly what they need to take their political coverage to the next level.
