The holiday season is a time for celebration and togetherness, marked by festive gatherings with family, friends, and coworkers. However, navigating holiday etiquette can sometimes be tricky when so many people come together.
To understand what Americans consider acceptable and unacceptable behavior at the holidays, YouGov surveyed 1,136 American adults from December 11-13, 2024. The consensus? Putting holiday decorations up before Thanksgiving – OK. Discussing politics at the dinner table? Not OK.
When it comes to decorating, majorities said it was fine to keep outdoor holiday lights on at night (60% say it’s acceptable) and leave them up past the holidays, until mid-January (59%). At parties, it’s completely acceptable to use disposable plates and utensils (83% say acceptable), but not to arrive late (44% say unacceptable) or fail to offer to contribute food or drinks (59% say unacceptable).Take a look below at their full takes on holiday etiquette – from decorating to setting the table to gift giving – to make sure you’re on the nice list.
