There’s been lots of talk about the benefits of using generative AI tools for more repetitive tasks, like taking notes in meetings or transcribing videos, to free up time for bigger-picture responsibilities. However, young knowledge workers are increasingly using gen AI for a “boost” in their work, from increasing productivity to enhancing their creativity and communication.
To study generative AI tool trends among this audience, Google surveyed 1,005 full-time knowledge workers (workers whose main capital is knowledge, like engineers or lawyers) ages 22-39, who are either in leadership roles or aspire to one. What they found: large majorities of young leaders are using gen AI during their workweeks. A full 93% of Gen Z knowledge workers and 79% of millennial knowledge workers use two or more gen AI tools per week.

And how they’re using gen AI tools is becoming increasingly sophisticated. 88% of knowledge workers said AI could help overcome task paralysis, by helping them start a to-do that feels overwhelming. Nearly 90% also said AI can help them nail the correct tone in their writing or compose lengthy emails on their phone. As they look ahead at their careers, 79% of knowledge workers anticipate using AI to become a better manager themselves – by helping them improve communication, enhance problem solving, and increasing team coordination.
Using gen AI tools at work is no longer hush-hush – in fact, young knowledge workers are excited to talk about which tools they use and what benefits they have. More than half of the AI users surveyed said they regularly share their gen AI experiences and recommendations with colleagues, and a full 75% have recommended specific AI tools to them. This increased openness about gen AI in the workplace can help more employees figure out what tools can best help them in their careers – today and in the future.
