To study how Americans are feeling about the AI tools they’re using, Ipsos surveyed 1,082 U.S. adults about their familiarity and usage of AI tools. What they found: lack of trust isn’t stopping Americans from utilizing AI in everything from work to personal tasks.
A majority of AI users agreed (18% strongly agree, 47% somewhat agree) that they don’t always trust AI tools but use them anyway. Under a third (29%) of users say they don’t check AI’s work because they trust it enough. Only 17% trusted AI “a lot” to provide accurate results, 16% trusted AI “a lot” to provide unbiased results, and just 14% trusted AI “a lot” to maintain the privacy of their data.

If trust in AI is low, adoption of AI isn’t. Despite that low trust, more than half say they like using AI tools at work (53%), and nearly three quarters of respondents say they like using AI for personal tasks (73%). In addition, 58% have used an AI-assisted internet search program, half of Americans (49%) say they’ve used an AI chat program in the past month, and nearly 40% have experimented with AI image generation.

AI is already woven into everyday routines at work and at home – so while people may not trust AI’s outputs entirely, its utility and ubiquitousness are making it impossible to ignore.
